The web design market is flooded with people who do not know how to build websites. Yes, some can put together a great looking site, but what about some key features like search engines, functionality, accessability and different browsers?
Let me explain what I mean
As with anything, there are certain standards and guidelines in building websites that help ensure that any website can be viewed by anyone regardless of computer preferences or browser. These guidelines are monitored by the W3C. Check out the validation of InSite Designs. Then use that tool to validate other web designers and see if they pass. Many website designers business websites do not pass. Which brings us back to my original point - that most web designers do not know know to build websites.
So what does all this mean?
For starters, your site may not display correctly for your site visitors depending on their browser (Interent Explorer, FireFox). Even if it does display correctly, search engines may not be able to read the site, and therefore cannot show it in search results.
Most Importantly
If a website designer cannot properly code the basic look of their own site, how well would you trust them do build your site? Especialy when you concider how secure a shopping cart must be to process sensative information, or a database to store personal information.
